Discovery Channel's series When We Left The Earth is worth your time. I grew up with the Apollo missions, and watching this series has taken me back in time. As a nine year old seeing Neil Armstrong utter his famous "One step for man..." as he ambled from the lunar module, I didn't realize what an engineering feat the moon landing was. Amazing.

We can put a man on the moon, but we can't we make cars that get better fuel mileage. WTF is with that?

Preparing for the sporting event of the year

I'm not talking about the Super Bowl.

We are planning our Daytona 500 party. Court has been cruising the web for ideas, and thanks to that other event of the year, she's found some great recipes.

Take, for instance, these bacon treats. I haven't eaten one, but I can already tell I'm going to love them! Pioneer Woman has the recipe.

With the overwhelming demand for HD satellite installations (that damned Super Bowl), we won't have HD until Feb 9th. Fortunately for me, it will be just in time for the Budweiser Shootout!

The thing to give this year

Apparently the thing to give your beloved this Valentine's Day is a new cell phone. I'd have never known this, were it not for all the advertisements during the games yesterday. And today I went to Sprint to check my account and the main page was all about their Valentine's Day special, because "love can't wait."

WTF?

The new Centro, which until now came only in red or black, is available in pink, just in time for V-Day.

Perhaps I'm behind the curve here, but it would never occur to me to woo my beloved on Valentine's Day with the gift of a cell phone. I'm not especially good at gift giving and I tend to be far too practical when considering gifts. But a cell phone seems to me to be among the least romantic gifts one could give to the love of her life.

As for Court and me, we don't even exchange gifts on Valentine's Day.

Touched by courage

I confess, I didn't watch President Bush's address the nation last night. I totally forgot about it.

What I did watch on TV last night-- James Gandolfini's Alive Day Memories-- really touched me.

I just don't have the words to describe how the stories of these ten men and women touched me. All I can say is watch it.

Dawn Halfaker's story made me weep when she speculated on her future. She wants to have children, but worries they may not love her because she is not able to pick them up with both arms.

So courageous, so resilient, yet so humble were all ten of Gandolfini's subjects. Regardless of your stand on the Iraq War, I'd like to think all can agree that we owe the men and women of our armed forces a tremendous debt.
