Overheard @Trop's

Trop: Hey hon, those trash cans we bought for the cafe... do you mind if I use one for target practice?

Court: Huh?

Trop: For disc-golf practice. I need to work on my throw. You'll see how much I still suck.

Court: Still throwing like a girl?

Trop: Worse than a girl!

Court: What's worse than a girl? A boy? [chuckling at herself]

Trop: [serious] Worse than that.

Court: What's worse than that?

Trop: [horrified] Me!

Court: What?

Trop: The sign on that car.

Court: "Odd Job Solutions."

Trop: I wonder how odd a job is too odd.

Court: What are you thinking?

Trop: Sperm donor.

Overheard @ Trop's

Trop: We're an unlikely pair for a perfect couple.

Court: We're like peas in a pod.

Trop: You are a sugar snap pea.

Court: Uh-huh.

Trop: And our kids will be a baby sweet peas.

Court: Uh-huh.

Trop: And I'll be a shriveled up pea.

Court: Like the kind they serve in school lunches.

Overheard @ Trop's

[While watching Whispers in the Dark]

Trop: I had the biggest crush on Annabella Sciorra after seeing this movie.

Court: My Dad has a huge crush on her.

Trop: He does?

Court: He loved her and Rebecca De Mornay in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.

Trop: Yes.

Court: It's really disconcerting... that you and my dad have crushes on the same women.

Trop: [chuckling]

Court: I guess it's true; we do marry our fathers.

Overheard @ Trop's

Court: Do we really want to swim for an hour?

Trop: [treading water] I know. I'm bored.

Court: We could swim for 30 minutes and then go home and do push-ups and crunches and lunges and squats.

[Trop ponders]

Trop: How 'bout we just go home and have rough sex?

Live Blogging the Kimpton

Court's popping open our complimentary champagne. We had a great time on the crab boat. Perfect weather, though it rained off and on.

I love DC, but I hate driving in DC. Streets are as fucked up as Congress.

We have 120 porno titles and ten Hollywood movies to choose from. We're watching the yoga channel.

Just saw the news. My favorite Paul Newman movie is Slap Shot. It was filmed in Johnstown, PA (where I grew up). I made a ton babysitting for the drug dealer and his wife while they went Paul Newman stalking. My parents where extras in the arena scenes.

BACK LATER

We sat across from Dr. Bob and his wife T, who reside in Raleigh NC. Bob was talking about how the best way to remember things is to keep a diary. So I told him I have a blog. I also told him about my near-firing when my old blog found its way to the Commonwealth's Attorney. Then I told Bob about our plan to own a farm in NC. He joked that I probably shouldn't bring my blog. "Be blogless," he said. "Virginal!"

"It's a little too late for that, Bob."

Dr. Bob near choked on his drink.

Then Dr. Bob and I talked about Sue Johanssen from the Oxygen channel. Our wives were NOT amused.

Overheard @Trop's

Trop: Amanda. Come in here. We need you to settle something for us.

Amanda: ~sigh. [eye roll]

Trop: [pointing to TV]. That is Planet of the Apes. The main ape character is Cornelius. When I was a kid, Boone used to say I look like Cornelius' wife. There she is. Do you think I look like her?

[watching several seconds of Cornelius' wife on TV]

Amanda: Kinda.

Courtney: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Overheard @ Trop's

Me: Did you hear that?

Court: What?

Me: There's a festival in Evergreen.

Court: Evergreen?

Me: Do you remember who lives in Evergreen?

[crickets]

Me: Remember Carol?

Court: Carol? OhhhHHHhhhh... Carol!

[short pause to consider]

Court: We definitely have to go!

Me: Of course, there's no guaranteeing we'll bump into her there. I didn't date her long enough to get her musical taste.

Court: Hmmm.

Me: I dated her only long enough to get a taste.

Overheard @ Trop's

"Ahhh... I got the biggest paragraph."

That was Amanda's response when she read the acknowledgments section of my dissertation. My only hard copy I made into a scrapbook, with cards and messages attached to the blank sides of pages. Amanda is looking at the page with "her" paragraph, and pasted next to it is her artwork and signature. She was four at the time.
