EX child star?

How is it that Dakota Fanning, just 15, is considered and ex-child star? Excuse me, but isn't a 15-year-old still a child? I know she looks grown up and all, but she's still a child.

Darwin Award contenders?
(Newser) – Bubonic plague is believed to have wiped out dozens of al-Qaeda recruits at a terror training camp in Algeria, the Daily Mail reports. The epidemic came to light when security forces found a militant's diseased body dumped on a roadside. Security sources say the plague forced the group to turn its hideout into a mass grave and flee, possibly infecting other terror cells. Some experts speculate that the deaths occurred as the cell was attempting to develop biological weapons.
Let's hope the pathogen kills them all before they can spread it to the general population.

Stuck in the USA
George. W. Bush may grant pardons to members of his administration for their constitutional abuses. But that doesn't mean they'll get away with it.

What could this mean?

Mission Accomplished
Five years ago today, George W. Bush declared victory in Iraq. The country swooned.Chris Matthews just couldn't help but have a major man crush on the President:
And check out this man-crush orgy on Hardball:
On the May 7, 2003, edition of Hardball, Matthews asked former Nixon administration official G. Gordon Liddy what he thought of the response to Bush's landing on the Abraham Lincoln. Looking at the footage, Liddy commented that Bush's flight suit made "the best of his manly characteristic." From the May 7 Hardball:
MATTHEWS: What do you make of this broadside against the USS Abraham Lincoln and its chief visitor last week?
LIDDY: Well, I -- in the first place, I think it's envy. I mean, after all, Al Gore had to go get some woman to tell him how to be a man. And here comes George Bush. You know, he's in his flight suit, he's striding across the deck, and he's wearing his parachute harness, you know -- and I've worn those because I parachute -- and it makes the best of his manly characteristic. You go run those -- run that stuff again of him walking across there with the parachute. He has just won every woman's vote in the United States of America. You know, all those women who say size doesn't count -- they're all liars. Check that out. I hope the Democrats keep ratting on him and all of this stuff so that they keep showing that tape.
Apparently, G. Gordon Liddy's five and half years in prison taught him a thing or two about man-love.
Size does matter. George W. Bush has to be the biggest dick to ever occupy the White House.

This decision bothers me

The state Human Rights Commission ruled this week that an Albuquerque wedding photographer discriminated against her would-be client by refusing to shoot a same-sex commitment ceremony.
Vanessa Willock filed a civil complaint with the labor department's Human Rights Bureau in 2006, saying Elaine Huguenin, co-owner of Albuquerque's Elane Photography, told her in an e-mail that she only photographed "traditional" marriages and would not photograph same-sex ceremonies.
In an order issued Wednesday, a panel of commissioners ruled that Huguenin discriminated against Willock based on sexual orientation and ordered Elane Photography to pay Willock's attorney's fees of $6,637.93.
An attorney for Huguenin promised to appeal in state District Court, contending the commission violated Huguenin's constitutional rights to practice her religion.
While I can sympathize with the complainant in this case, I just don't get where the government, in a FREE country, has the power to take away a private business owner's right to refuse service to anyone for any reason. If a wedding photographer does not want to photograph a same-sex ceremony, then so be it. That photographer suffers the opportunity cost of not taking the job, and risks the negative word-of-mouth from scorned customers. That's the way the market works. And in my opinion, it should be the end off the story. Surely there is another photographer more than willing to make a buck on the ceremony.
There are a lot of groups I would not want to do business with. As a private business owner, should that not be my right? On what basis may the government compel me, for example, to do business with Fred Phelps or any member of Westboro Baptist Church? Even though I am admittedly discriminating on the basis of religion, shouldn't that be my right?
I just don't get where the case of the gay couple and the refusing photographer has any legs at all.

The day William F. Buckley, Jr. was upstaged by Mr. Rogers
It was May 1987. I was supposed to be marching across a stage to receive my master's degree. My parents drove the 330 miles to Ohio to see me graduate, even though I failed to finish my thesis in time to participate. I hadn't even started writing the damned thing. We decided to go to graduation anyway. William F. Buckley Jr. was the keynote speaker. He was one of the better known luminaries to speak at a BGSU commencement. It was a big deal.
I had been to my share of commencement exercises, so I had a good idea what to expect from Buckley: sage words of wisdom and advice for all the lucky suckers graduating that day.
After an introduction long on accolades and praise, Buckley stepped up to the podium. He spoke. When he finished, there was a moment of awkward silence followed by tepid applause.
Though none of us dared to admit it, I suspect we were all asking ourselves: "What the fuck was that all about?"
You know what I'm talking about.
How perfect that on this day, the recipient of an honorary doctorate also gave a speech. While Buckley lost us with his ten dollar words and never ending sentences, this man kept it simple.
This man was none other than Fred Rogers, of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. In his quintessentially gentle manner, Mr. Rogers spoke of all those things one needs to know and learns in the neighborhood... his neighborhood (forget about Kindergarten,
Robert Fulghum). He ended his speech by leading us all in the singing of It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. The crowd cheered and erupted in impassioned applause. I'll never forget it. The ever humble Fred Rogers totally upstaged William F. Buckley, Jr.
How fitting, at least in my mind, that Mr. Rogers and Mr. Buckley have February 27th in common.
Rest in peace, neighbors.

Journalist or porn star? You decide.
I doubt any of my one or two readers watch the Fox News Channel. I watch it from time to time. Yes, they are conservative and take their talking points from the White House and the RNC, but that's not why I watch. They just happen to offer their news programming (Shepard Smith or Brit Hume) at a time that's convenient for me to watch, when no other news outlet offers an alternative. What you've been missing by foregoing the FNC is the eye candy. FNC has the hottest babes in all of TV journalism.
Anyway, here's a great quiz about the Foxy Ladies of Fox News Channel. It's worth a play.
